Bug Out Tent
I'd like to get a good tent for bug out for my family. Something durable, that I can keep in my pickup. Any suggestions/internet sources?

Re: Bug Out Tent
Can't go wrong with military surplus. I just found this on the 'net, so I have no idea if the company is reputable or not. Maybe there's a surplus store near you?

Re: Bug Out Tent
Another place you might want to try is Cabela's. Their Outfitter series of tents have a good reputation for durability and ease of setup.

are you looking for quick cover or camping comfort ? ( quick cover could be a large tarp over a picnic table ) are you worried about the weight ? how far will your family go to " rough it " ? as Olmstein said above, military surplus could be the way to go depends what your budget is and what comfort level you're looking for Quote:
that Wild Oasis is a nice little package except for the price i've always made do with a tarp for the last 10+ years but i've mostly hiked/camped solo, and a part of camping is " roughing it " |
Re: Bug Out Tent
I had a big, green canvas, army surpuls tent for many years.. It was very heavy and it leaked in the rain.:
Whats wrong with a nice lightweight modern tent? |
Re: Bug Out Tent
I'd like to find some large camo tarps- the kind you use to disguise vehicles, etc. Anyone know what they're called and where to find?
TIA. |

I like that wall tent in Cabela's there. I have a small family, just my wife and infant son. I was looking at all the flooding that is going on in Iowa, and remembering what happened in New Orleans and Houston. I think other parts of the US are in for something similar. I am thinking about stocking up a large container, something I can quickly load into my full size pickup, if we have to 'head for the hills,' so to speak. In other words, if we have to leave the neighborhood for an extended time, and don't neccessarily have any place to go. I don't really envision having to hike out, though I suppose it is possible. |

while i would agree here about not depending on your pickup 100% you should use your pickup as far as circumstances would allow (gas/road conditions) even if just to get you out of a metro area you could also look into something like these http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Truck_tent_main.htm with maybe a smaller tent in case you have to bug out from the pickup |
Re: Bug Out Tent
I should think that the type of tent you will want should be determined by your AO. If you live in the Sierras like me you will need a minimum of a 3 season tent. I went with a 4 season Kealty. A little heavy but will provide real shelter. Now, if I was living back in SO Cal, a bug net and a walmart tarp might suffice. Shelter building skills are also a must!
